What do you get when you cross Lassie with a cantaloupe? A Melon-Collie baby!
Bad jokes aside, there are times when splitting dog hairs teeters on being
either beneficial or detrimental. Was Lassie a Border Collie? No. She was
a Rough Collie. So the question, "What Border Collie has a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame?" is incorrect. Nevertheless, nine out of eleven
teams guessed Lassie was the correct answer. Because there are only three
dogs on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; Strong Heart, Rin Tin Tin and Lassie.
Two are German Shepherds. So whether Lassie is a Rough Collie or a Border
Collie is irrelevant. Collie is the operative word in this case. Therefore,
challenging the Quiz Master about the propriety of the question is pointless,
time consuming and inciteful. To complain about it in a passing comment is
okay. To continue to harp on it afterwards is unacceptable. No appropriate
action can be taken. Move along, please.
Now that Quiz Master Lou's rant is out of the way, our quiz at the Lion &
Crown was pretty good. The competition was strong (scores were high), the
questions were tough enough to keep the Double-or-Nothing's down to a
minimum (amongst the cooler headed, anyway) and the border collies kept
the sheep away from the cheese (I don't know what that means but it sounds
funny).
Newbie team, The Brother's Jon, opted out early though they did earn their
two point bonus for registering. IFFY! and Ship It!, undermanned, were
undeterred. Smart Asses and Street Smarts hustled with the best of them while
Hilltoppers and Stealth Texas kept each other warm just outside the winner's
circle. Resident champs Ninja Turtles (Perhaps aided by a pillow version
of Raphael?) took first. Beer Logic took second (without pretzels) and
Binge Thinking got third.
Have a wonderful weekend everybody!
Quiz Master Lou's got a new bag! Spotlight on the Teams! In an effort to give back to those who make it happen, Quiz Master Lou is going to shine a light on the people who play King Trivia Pub Quiz. An interview of sorts, I passed out a short questionnaire (5 questions) to each team to find out a little bit about them. Here are the results...
This week's spotlight is on: Pickles on a Plate
Team Captain(If there is one): All Others (by specialty if applicable):
Brian Carr Cecilia Hamilton Chris Magargee Diane Riles
How did your team get its name and what does it mean?
When Brian, one of our team members, was young in Philadelphia, his mom would send him and his sister into NYC to see a show and have lunch. Well, by the time they got to Sardi's, they had pretty much no $ (money) left, so when ordering, they asked for water all around and some "pickles on a plate..."
What is your favorite (or top favorites) Round in the King Trivia Pub Quiz? (General Knowledge, Picture Round, Theme Round, Guess Who?, Find-the-Connection, Hand-Out or Round Seven) and why?
Guess Who? and Picture round.
What was your most memorable moment during a King Trivia Pub Quiz?
When the two Ninja Turtles got engaged.
What, if any, are the benefits of playing trivia games in pubs?
Alcohol consumption, of course!
Is life pre-destined or do things just happen randomly? And; What changes would you like to see?
(Declined to answer part one.) Never, ever again, ask Harry Potter questions!
Quiz Master Lou's Wrap-up:
Pickles on a Plate has always been my team for demonstrable erudition, eloquence and esoteric knowledge. They strive and surprise when the trivia gets out into some of the classical weeds and their intelligence is only matched by their kindness and good cheer. Dill, fried or sweet, I luvs me some pickles on a plate!
There was a birthday amongst the Pickles last night, but that member's modesty demurred recognition. (That's so like her!) In any case, the Pickles opened in the lead but finished third, being overtaken by Binge Thinking, who themselves competitively moved steadily into first position only to get ambushed in the final two rounds by the Ninja Turtles! Another great question set from our Quiz writers who focused on Valentine's Day stuff. (Round Seven was Quiz Master Lou's particular favorite, himself having been a stage rat at one point in his many lives!)
Well, that's all the news that's fit to print. Have a wonderful weekend, all!
As the infamous cult actor Greg Travis once said in his inimitable fashion
in the movie Starship Troopers, "It's an ugly planet! It's a bug planet!",
so too, does Quiz Master Lou proclaim, "It's a crowded pub! It's a Quiz pub!"
QM Lou hit a new benchmark by hosting 21 teams/76 players at the Lion & Crown
in Allen last night. A new record by his standards, though I'm sure kid's
stuff to some of our more seasoned QM's in Los Angeles. But man, the pub
was packed!
As predicted, Binge Thinking accelerated their game and took home first place
while it's-been-awhile team Ship It! snagged second. Standby faves Stealth
Texas sneaked third.
The Double-or-Nothing's came in rushes during the Round Seven, Round Six and
of course, the Picture Round, with most of the fails accredited to Agatha Christie.
Best wrong guesses were Madame Curie, Margaret Meade, Florence Nightingale,
Elanor Roosevelt, Jane Austen and Helen Keller. (I know, right?) But the funniest
and most improbable guess was the team who mistook Sidney Poitier for George
Bernard Shaw. (Not sure if that was intentional or not...)
Hats off once again to our Quiz writers in Californ-i-ay who did another
bang up job. That's all the news that's fit. No, really. Have a great
weekend everybody!
