Much energy was expended at the Lion & Crown in Allen last night when trivia teams old, new and regular congregated for the old quiz confab. Welcome to out-of-towners Herbert (the name of their owl, which they bring with them wherever they go) and to the unregistered Blabber Stammers, who play, go away for six months, then return to play again. Welcome also to new team (but old faces) Audrey, who completely missed round one but still made a decent showing anyway.
The Dim Bulbs came back, a few watts brighter than before. Speaking of coming back, team Foot Clan returned like the prodigal sons of guns they are and took first place! Funny that, as they tend to win or place whenever they deign appear. Quizmaster Lou casually mentioned they just "drop in to win" and Foot Clan said that would be their T-Shirt slogan. (Hrmph!)
Ninja Turtles and Blood, Bath & Beyond took second and third places respectively. Mr. Ship It! turned up solo and joined forces with B,B & B, turning the evening's competition into a real knife fight. Talk about playing in absentia, Stealth Texas captain Matt was out of town, so his rudderless teammates took up the banner under the command of First Mate Tito and led the charge, ending up just behind the Bumble Bees, two spaces away from the winner's circle.
Of the night's momentous events, Quizmaster Lou's unpopular ruling on the specific connection in the Find-the-Connection round nearly caused a riot causing him to wonder, "If I can't get laughs, should I go for acrimony?" And while many knew the final line from KING KONG, Quizmaster Lou ended the evening with this esoteric prose from Godzilla: King of the Monsters... "This is it, George. Steve Martin, signing off from Tokyo, Japan."
Quizmaster Lou doesn't pretend to know the significance of these things, if indeed there is, he just reports them. Have a great week, all!
The atmosphere at the Lion & Crown in Allen was strangely low energy last night. The players seemed a little, well... lethargic. Maybe it was the soft spring winds with their soothing though temporary coolness before the expected hot, muggy summer heat sets in. Sometimes a change in the weather can put one into a state of complacency, where one just sits, sips their drink and fixates on nothing in particular. If such a thing were possible, I would almost say it was like people were "Turning to Stone"... Hey! With apologies to the Electric Light Orchestra...
The pub house seats are empty now
(Quizmaster just came in the door)
The teams are picking at their food
Turning, turning, turning
A voice comes out my microphone
(The echoes of my plight)
Of everything that is alive in my quiz world
You turn to stone when I am gone
You turn to stone, turn to stone
When you perkin' up?
I must go on
The general questions in Round One
(Is fire that slowly stirred the brain)
Took pen in hand to get it done
Thinking, thinking, thinking
Too many teams tried to X the box
(For Double or Nothings)
Laid down to get my final score
In my quiz world
You turn to stone when I am gone
You turn to stone, turn to stone
When you comin' up?
I must go on
Turn to stone when I am gone
You turn to stone
Yes you're turning to stone
'Cause my quizin' is done
If you're turning to stone
I've been gone for too long
And you can't carry on
Yes you're turning, you're turning
you're turning to stone
The R.O.U.S. showed up again
(Team Testa and the Hilltoppers)
Stealth Texas, Ship It!, Blood, Bath & Beyond
Thinking, thinking, through all that gin
But three teams took it to the gate
(Ninja Turtles reclaimed their throne)
Men of Troy and Pickles on a Plate
To my quiz world
Turn to stone when I am gone
You turn to stone
Quizmaster Lou suggests you YouTube the song and sing along. That's all folks! Have a great week!
The Lion & Crown was jammed last night as teams both large and small packed into the place for the King Trivia Pub Quiz! The return of the Ninja Turtles after a two week absence may have had something to do with the crowded atmosphere, but a visit by the Alcoballics and a revisit by Shredder Squad also added to the numbers. Welcome to newbies Wis-CAN-sin and also a shout out to the Dim Bulbs and IFFY!
FUNNIEST ANSWERS:
Some teams thought Moses’ wife’s name was either Este Lauder or Ultra.
Fried Green Tomatoes was not the sequel to Little Women.
Nurse Ratched was not a character from A Clockwork Orange. (Although she could have been…)
Sin City and Party City are not actual U.S. cities. Likewise, Smallville and Cruella DeVille.
In the winner’s circle, Pickles on a Plate outdistanced their competition by leaps and bounds by double-or-nothing – ing (did I just use that as a verb?) their way into first place with an astonishing 76 points! Stealth Texas tied with the Bumble Bees for second with the tie breaker going to the former. Lot of excitement there.
That’s all the news that’s fit to print. Until next week, cowabunga, man!
