A hot game of King Trivia Pub Quiz is just the thing to warm up a cold night; And that’s just what happened at the Lion & Crown Pub in Allen Thursday night as temperatures plunged to below freezing. Newly formed (from pub regulars) team, The Misfits have been steadily climbing the ladder to victory these past few weeks and succeeded in claiming first place. The cold didn’t bother our resident champs, The Ninja Turtles either, as they won second place, nice and cozy by their regular seats at the fireplace. Third Place honors went to The Shredder Squad, who heated up the joint with their own brand of fiery trivia answers from the center table, thus ensuring no one was cold.
Special mention to sentimental faves IFFY!, who almost placed this week. Also, good effort to Bloomington, a two gal team who held their own against the seasoned vets at the L&C. Welcome to Brees Knees, Quality Goods and Hoohah, who all had a great time and are now figuring out how to stack their team for the future! If I didn’t mention you, it’s only because of brevity. Know I love all my teams!
It was a great set of questions as well, keeping everyone’s brain running hot as they tried to discern the answers. As Socrates once said, “The warmth of intellect fueled by the fiery passion of wine is the alchemist’s compound which burns white hot and melts all but the truth!” Well, Socrates never said that… But he should have! Actually, Quizmaster Lou said it and he’s sticking to it! Happy week, everyone!
A glorious New Year to everyone as we play our first game in 2018… The Year of the Dog! Any dogs out there? I’m a dog. Woof! It’s up to all us dogs this year to make sure we show tolerance and empathy towards the people we meet to preserve our karmic balance, especially if we wish to avoid unnecessary conflicts. But enough philosophizing! Onto the recap!
!2 teams showed. 12 teams played. Welcome to newcomers Longboard Surfers. Welcome back to long absent Foot Clan, who decided to just drop in and take first place! Stealth Texas snagged second and Blood, Bath & Beyond solidly took third.
It was a challenging set of quiz questions this week. The Theme Round and Find-the-Connection Round engendered the most pain, although the Guess Who Round frustrated a lot of eager beavers who tried to cash in on the big points early on instead of waiting for the confirmation clues and settling for less points. C’est la vie.
Gambling is the devil’s snare which catches the greedy as evidenced by the number of failed Double-or-Nothings that occurred. Hmmm… Maybe there’s something to be said for careful consideration and balanced judgment? Quizmaster Lou thinks so. Then again, where would we be without the drama of agonized victories and glorious defeats? Until next week, I remain, loyally yours.
A new record for Quizmaster Lou, who had to wrangle twelve (12) teams at the Lion & Crown last night. (I know some of you other Quizmasters have to handle that and more on a regular basis… So now I have a greater appreciation for QM’s who work the big joints!) Perhaps it was the holiday mood or the fact that during the lull between Christmas and New Year’s, most folks don’t have to get up for work/class in the morning; But whatever it was, the joint was packed!
Newbies Two Dollar Bill Y’all, Misfits and Bloomington got in on the action, along with some teams we haven’t seen in a while – Blood, Bath & Beyond, Pickles on a Plate, Rogue One and Royal Flush, who threatened to take first place but settled for second. L&C regulars IFFY!, Beer Logic and Ship It! mixed it up while resident champs Ninja Turtles took third and Stealth Texas snuck in for a last minute win of first place.
And now, Quizmaster Lou shall pontificate… That curious period between Christmas and New Year’s is indeed, an unusual time of the year. It is a time of cheer and joy. It is a time of sadness. It is a time for reflection. It is a time for gluttony and a time for restraint. Maybe it’s just me, but I just got the feeling people are a tad more hopeful this holiday season. Or maybe what I’m feeling is a giddy excitement about the uncertainty of the future. It is times like this when I recall the teachings of my former master, Kwai Chang Caine, who once told me, “Is it not better to seek understanding of the future, than to wallow in the mistakes of the past?”
Happy Holidays, All!
