“There’s no business like show business” seems to have been the central theme of last night’s pub quiz. Scores were pretty evenly matched until Round Three when The Bumble Bees broke out into a narrow lead, with Royal Flush and Pickles on a Plate tying for a second place spot. It wasn’t until Round Five that The Fam doubled down and grabbed the first position, holding onto it for a win in the final round with Ninja Turtles taking second and Ship It! taking third.
As an homage to the entertainment centric questions that dominated the quiz, Quizmaster Lou has perverted the lyrics to one of Hollywood’s all time perennial songs. After all, tinsel town is used to perversions!
There's no trivia like King Trivia
Like no Trivia I know
Everything about it is frustrating
Remembering all those facts is a pain
Nothing else can baffle your thinking
When you’re seeking answers from your brain
There's no people like quiz people
They smile when they Know
Even a trick question that you know ain’t cool
You will double or nothing like a crazy fool
Still you wouldn't change it for a swimming pool
Let's get on with the show!
(with apologies to Irving Berlin)
That's all folks! See you next week!
It was maximum overdrive at the Lion & Crown on Thursday night with six, count ‘em, six new teams wanting to get in on the action. However, as the evening drew on and the questions started getting tough, the not-so-tough got going… Out the door! Just like at SEAL training camp, at each phase (or round if you will), another King Trivia Pub Quizzer candidate dropped out. Only the tough, the determined and the perseverant went the distance. Interestingly enough, of the six newbies, the team calling themselves S&M survived the ordeal. It kind of reminds me of the joke about the farm girl who wrote home to her parents about what a breeze Marine Corps boot camp was!
Even so, the competition was hot and heavy with a second place tie breaker between Ninja Turtles and IFFY! The irregular duo, Bumble Bees took first place honors. Two people beating two teams of eight people each is especially commendable, but honor was earned and respect given when it turned out one of the Bumble Bees was a former Jeopardy! contestant! Couple of hundred pound brains there, I tell you!
The theme round on South America seemed to be the toughest for last night’s crowd. Some very clever questions referencing our southern continental neighbor were set down to stump our challengers. Nice going, KT Quizzers! That’s all the news that fits. Until next week, I remain….

In the news!: King Trivia Pub Quiz seems to be on a growing trend at the marvelous Lion & Crown Pub here in beautiful Watters Creek plaza, where the only worry seems to be securing a parking spot closest to one’s destination. And for Quizmaster Lou, who has to lug his Fender sound system and quiz gear, that can be a real competition! Old Lou isn’t as young as he used to be. Humping 50 lbs of equipment is daunting enough to make Quizmaster Lou get territorial over a parking space that’s even only 10 feet closer! Where was I? Oh! More teams are showing up to play!
Welcome to newbies The Fam, The Leo’s and Kihil (probably soon to change their name…) One thing I’ve noted about game play since I’ve been emceeing the quiz, the regular teams are starting to equalize in the scoring department. Scores are narrowing to just a few points making the competition more fierce. Having a six way tie on Round One ought to tell you something.
Probably the highlight of the evening was Quizmaster Lou’s acappella rendition of Lesley Gore’s It’s My Party… Or it could have been the lowlight, depending on whom you ask! Also noteworthy were some of the wrong answers. The stumper question (IMHO) last night was, “What is the term for a baby alligator?” (Interestingly enough, only team Kihil got it right, but ironically, they missed all the other questions in that round!) When one doesn’t have a clue as to the answer, a flippant answer can engender hilarity instead of leaving a blank space; And Quizmaster Lou will certainly exploit it for a laugh. Hence, Memo Y Bandito’s response of Geico prompted guffaws!
In any case, a great time was had by all. Until next week, I remain… Humbly… Quizmaster Lou.
