Mirth and laughter were had at the Lion & Crown’s Thursday King Trivia Pub Quiz as teams jostled for winning scores amidst the esoteric queries posed by Quizmaster Lou. The knowledge base of the L&C crowd became blatant as all teams whizzed through rounds one, two and three. But from then on out, the thinking got so hard you could hear the wheels grinding in their brains as they tried to figure out the answers!
Stealth Texas astonished with an early lead by attaining two back-to-back Double-or-Nothing wins in the first two rounds! The rest of the pack chased the winner all night with second and third places falling to Pickles on a Plate and Ship It! respectively.
TEAM STUFF: Welcome back to some old faces we haven’t seen in a few weeks… The Pilarinski’s, the Bastard Barristers and the Shibblets (Not yet registered, but teetering on the edge). Welcome to newcomers, B-Unit. The Rockafellers brought their posse and slugged it out with the best of them. And, as always, IFFY! ‘Nuff said.
FUNNY STUFF: Armie Hammer sounds like a G.I. tool. Napoleon’s Hooch is not a brand of cognac. Lawyers (Bastard Barristers) knew the Candy Land board game better than anyone else! The Grand Tetons could have been named El Grande Chi-Chi’s if the fur trappers who named them had been Spanish instead of French. (Don’t ask how that came up…)
Right! Next week! Be there!
Bobs. We get Bobs. A fascinating and most informative Round Three on “Bob’s Your Uncle”. Difficult and rewarding for its choice of Roberts. Only one team knew who Robert Fitzsimmons was. Well done, King! And the hue and cry for simpler Bobs went up. “How come they didn’t ask me who Bob Barker was?!?” Hilarious! I guess bobbing for Bobs isn’t as easy as it looks.
Welcome to new teams 2 Girls 1 Cup, Nitro Panther and Fred & Barney. Welcome back to Rockafellas and Guess-a-Lot. Congratulations to the Hilltoppers who came with more of their clan and grabbed first prize. Stealth Texas assimilated the second place award and Ship It! took third.
Quizmaster Lou’s Tips
It’s interesting to watch how the various trivia teams react to the question sets they are given during game play. A leading team’s morale can go from ebullient to crestfallen (or vice-versa) at the announcement of the next question set’s subject matter. The crowd at the Lion & Crown in Allen was no exception when Round Seven’s focus centered on the 2018 Oscar nominees for best original and best adapted screenplay. The 2018 Academy Awards ceremony was the least watched in the award’s history. The L&C’s teams were mostly clueless, commensurately. Pens dropped. Walk outs. But this should get players thinking in a strategic mode. Pay attention to the list of Question Sets announced at the beginning of the game and prepare how to play your best guesses and Double-or-Nothing’s accordingly based your knowledge of the categories given. Quizmaster Lou has spoken…
Have a safe week, everyone!
It was a full house at the Lion & Crown Public House on Thursday’s Quiz night with fourteen teams competing furiously for top prizes. Two things about last night’s gathering: 1) This Quizmaster has never seen so many Double-or-Nothing’s in one game, and 2) I have never seen so many high scores before, either!
This led to an interesting post-game discussion when one of the Blood, Bath & Beyond team mates walked up and asked me, “How many points are possible in a game?” Quizmaster Lou is sure that he was walking the path that previous King Trivia types have traipsed before, so if any other quizmasters or admin staff are reading this, let me know your take on the subject. As for our little corner of the universe, we came up with 114. This would be under the ideal conditions of getting every answer right, successfully Double-or-Nothing in every possible round and applying your two point bonus for team registration. Of course, there are always variations. Round Seven doesn’t always have ten questions and some quizmasters award/subtract points for ancillary merits/violations. So the number could be slightly lower or higher depending on quiz specifics and local conditions. Still, we think 114 is a good bar.
That being said, Shredder Squad took First Place with a whopping 90 points! Pickles on a Plate won second with 79 points and the Ninja Turtles kicked it with 76! Hell! The Bumble Bees came in fourth with 75 points and fifth place was 64 points by Blood, Bath & Beyond! Even newbie team, The Shiblets, who clearly didn’t know what they were getting into (but had a ton ‘o fun just the same) successfully Doubled or Nothing in the last round! Ahhh… The fun. The fun.
QM Lou signing off for now!
