Last minute arrivals seemed to be the theme at the Lion & Crown last night as
three newbie teams joined in the fun just as Round One had begun. Welcome to
Jessica's Birthday (and a very happy one to ya, Jessica!), Pour Decision and
The Stumps (who ended up stumping out after Round Two...).

As newbies go, Pour Decision got the hang of things quickly because they ended
up winning, beating out seasoned vets Street Smarts by a one point victory!
Rockerfeller, having had a taste for victory lately, edged into a comfortable
third place win. The Bar Guys under Sean's new management rode the whirlwind
of the lead through the middle of the quiz, but dropped off after half time. As
always, stalwarts Blood. Bath & Beyond and Ship It!, whom hereafter shall be
referred to as the Deadly Alliance, played their usual competitive game but
did not place this evening.

A pretty good quiz from our writers, but maybe a little bit lost in translation
twixt California and Texas. Most teams identified the hair style pictured
Flat Top as High Top while the Weave was almost universally recognized as the
Bob. The Beehive, however, is a Texas tradition! Our most mirthful answers
came in the final Round Seven, naming the ten largest moons in the solar system!
Style points went to Gallifrey, the Death Star and Moony Von Moonschmertz but
top marks to Jessica's BD who wrote on their quiz page:
1. The Moon
2. The
3. rest
4. can't
5. hold
6. a
7. candle
8. to
9. the
10. Moon!

Have a great weekend everybody!

It was a happy Halloween King Trivia Pub Quiz on the actual day, fellow trick
or treaters, at the Lion & Crown! Unfortunately for Quiz Master Lou, a malicious
prankster calling itself Quiz Master Lucifer waylaid me and took over the show!
This dandy diablo indulged delightfully in daunting dilemmas, dazzling the crowd
at the old L&C. I heard he pulled the rug out from under the faithful by sub-
stituting the Thursday FaceBook question with an alternate. (Gasp!) That's
dreadfully diabolical! The dastardly devil!

Enough alliteration, on with the dispatch... Things decidedly were working in
this demon's favor because there were seven teams playing. You know seven is a
mystical number, right? Seven Deadly Sins... Seven days to create the world...
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers... (Bedazzled - 1967) In any case, all questions
referenced things Halloweeny and there were no hollow weenies present. The Round
Four Guess Where round proved a little too easy. Eveie of the Ninja Turtles
happens to be Scottish and everyone in the pub knew it. When she ran up on stage
squealing with delight, they all put two and two together and all seven teams
guessed Loch Ness and got the ten pointer!

Street Smarts dominated around Round Five and poured salt into everyone else's
wounds by getting 9 out of 10 candy bars correct in the Round Seven challenge.
Ninja Turtles, dressed appropriately, got second while Stealth Texas zombied
into a third place win. Thanks to Sean for reviving team Bar Guy for a night
and Beer Logic and IPMP and of course, the deadly alliance of Blood, Bath &
Beyond/Ship It! for un-evening out the evening.

And now, like Fantasia's end sequence, as the eve of all saints and the final
strains of Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain fade artfully into the morning
light of hope and Schubert's Ave Maria Opus 52 and No. 6, Quiz Master Lucifer
folds himself up, cocoon like, and puts himself away... Until next year...

Hmmm... I think I'll be a pirate next Halloween.

It may have been a rainy night in Allen, but that didn't stop the dogged and
determined from coming out to play King Trivia Pub Quiz at the Lion & Crown!
While the weather was cold and wet, it only matched the pleasurable essence of
the adult beverages which slaked our collective thirst. (The pizza was pretty
good, too!)

The lead can be a fickle mistress and proved so last night as she went from
team to team to team. Our General Knowledge Round yielded a three way tie in
the opening but quickly narrowed, with the king of the hill being replaced
regularly as each round presented different challenges to different intellects.

Ship It!, Street Smarts and Stealth Texas were all positioned to take the top
honors in the beginning but as the evening drove on, their course grew less
steady. Our old friends the Hilltoppers made a stunning comeback with a first
place win while delightful newbies Experiama exploded with a surprising second
position victory!

Our quiz had some surprises as well. However, the question about what kind of a
thing is a blunderbuss is too easy for a bar in Texas. (Just sayin'...) The
Picture Round was pretty clever and challenging, trying to ID the movie a video
game is based on. Virtually no one got Manos: Hands of Fate, but style points
went to the team that put down Quiz Master Lou: The Reckoning! (And I thought it
had something to do with Frank Zappa...)

Kudos to Derek and Kito, just because... Have a happy weekend everyone!
