Quiz Master Lou had his hands full at the Lion & Crown in Allen
last night as eight teams gathered to play our own King Trivia
Pub Quiz. Three regulars and five noobies congregated to copiously
compete in compelling cognizance! (I spelled newbies differently
this time, with two "o"s. Just trying it on for size.)
A lot of fun was had by the large family gathering of a group
styling themselves The Dragons, who played not too wisely, but
too well, having succumbed to the lure of Double-or-Nothing. A
team that had played once before and actually walked away with
first place the last time was the cleverly named There Will Be
Blood & Honey. They didn't fare so well this time, but that may
be attributed to the lack of English Literature questions on last
night's quiz. C'est la guerre. The Trebek's did their best to
live up the late, great Jeopady! host. So Much Pressure made
most of the right moves including registering their team for that
two point bonus, but fell short in the answer department. A great,
big howdy to the long, lost regs the Dallas Boolers Club, whom
this quiz master has not seen since pre-covid days over at the
defunct Killarney's. They dropped in, played furiously and landed
just outside the winner's circle in fourth place with an amazing
DoN in Round Seven! Our 50 lb brained, one-man-army, Velvet Hammered,
spiked a third palce win. Real drama was had when a tie breaker
between noobies Shake & Bake and veterans Ship It! occurred. The
vets won the tie breaker and scored first place while S&B enjoyed
a second place victory.
Our quiz overlords came through yet again with both a fun and
challenging set of questions. The Country Singing Women Picture
Round engendered a lot of DoN's. The Guess Who Round sparked a
lot of wrong guesses (which didn't stop the Dragons from submitting
a guess after each clue!) The Handout Round which matched scientists
to their discovery was inspiring while the Round Seven NHL Stanley
Cup losers list derailed some and elevated others.
That's all I got. Have a great weekend! Bye!

Well, faith and begorah! Tis the day after St. Patrick's and
there's no lettin' up o' the Irish. O' course, the Lion and
Crown's an English pub, but the good lord bless 'em, they paid
hommage to the green just the same. (Oim tinkin' Saint Paddy
ought ta get his own week, not just a day!) Dat's da way King
Trivia played it in any case.
Five veteran and one rookie team/s competed for the gold. Not
in the Leprechaun's pot though, the trivia prize gold of pub
credit awarded to the winners. The Hunters, our newbies, did
well and enjoyed themselves but also learned that the KTPQ can
be tough fun and games. Team Captain Awesome just barely lost
out to Pickles on a Plate for third place. The Bumble Bees
took a respectable second while that 50 pound brained, alcohol
fuelled, one-man-army, Velvet Hammered sprinted into first!
In keeping with St. Patrick's week, King Trivia proffered a
couple of rounds of Irish themed content and a smattering of
likewise questions throughout. On one particular querry, only
one team knew the name of the ban The Corrs, but style points
had to be awarded to the team who answered, "Not U2".
And in the spirit o' the green, Quiz Master Lou leaves you
with this little ditty, inspired by a CGI video of a line of
chimpanzees doing River Dance. No, really! I wouldn't call
it a deep fake, but it's worth a schmoogle (search term Irish
Dancing Monkeys).
When Irish monkeys are dancing
Sure, 'tis like the jungle Spring
In the lilt of primate laughter
You can hear orangutans sing
When Irish apes are happy
All the world seems bright and gay
What when Irish monkeys are dancing
They steal your banana away
The Lion & Crown - Allen was party central last night. Quiz
Master Lou was surprised that he was the opening act for the
band Cleghorn, as they set up on stage upon arrival. The
defunct DJ Booth's barrier of last season's seat cushions and
unused sound equipment proved too difficult to breach in the
time allotted; So, QM Lou improvised a beachhead on the floor,
by the door and to the corps! Adapt. Survive. Overcome! It's
all part of the reopening...
Four registered teams hit the beach with aplomb as their LC's
deposited their assualt upon King Trivia's Quiz bunker. Team
Captain Awesome took the most casualties due to too many Double
or Nothing's. But their sacrifice was not in vain. Their esprit
d'corps shall live forever in our hearts. Stealth Texas managed
third place win, capturing Pont d'Hoc like the rangers they are.
Ship It! drew Juno Beach and snagged second place. The main
glory goes to Pickles on a Plate, who hit the cliffs like Normandy.
And, throwing wave after wave at the questions, swept up the
draw to victory!
Style points awaded for the best wrong answers:
*Levar Burton misidentified as Data from ST:TNG.
*John Cusack was the answer to a Super Mario Bros. question that
had nothing to do with the movie. And, John Leguizamo wasn't the
answer, either!
*But the evening's best misuided guess was in trying to speculate
what 10 of the 11 Academy Awards were that were awarded to The
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Some wag put down...
Best ORC - estra!
Have a great weekend!
